Dermal Fillers

There are many ways to age gracefully — from a balanced diet and regular exercise, to a dedicated daily skincare routine, to plastic surgery. The latter delivers rapid and dramatic results, but it is also invasive, expensive, risky and difficult to reverse. The others are important parts of a healthy lifestyle, but their results are often subtle and slow to appear.

Dermal fillers have become tremendously popular in recent years due to their effectiveness in sculpting the face and reducing signs of aging quickly, safely and without downtime. Fillers are also versatile and affordable, not to mention significantly less painful than surgery. What Are Dermal Fillers?

As we age, our skin thins and produces less collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. We also lose subcutaneous fat in our faces. These changes cause our skin to lose volume and elasticity, giving our face a more gaunt and hollow appearance, and giving rise to wrinkles around our mouth, nose and chin. These lines are visible regardless of whether our face is in motion or at rest. Injectable dermal fillers are gel-like substances designed to treat moderate to severe wrinkles of this type. Fillers can also be used to enhance the shape of the face, improve the size and proportion of specific features, add volume to the lips and cheeks, and even revitalize the backs of aging hands.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

The most prevalent and popular dermal fillers are made with hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is an incredible compound found in many different parts of the human body. In the skin, it plays an critical role in maintaining hydration, elasticity and a youthful appearance. HA molecules are hydrophilic — meaning they attract and retain water — and can hold many times their own weight in water.

HA fillers essentially create an internal scaffolding that supports your skin. When they are injected into an area, they work beneath your skin to add volume where it is lacking naturally, particularly in creases and places where elasticity has diminished over time. The gel “fills in” the area underneath the skin and binds to water to create a plumping effect. The result is instantly smoother and more lifted skin.

What Concerns Can Dermal Fillers Treat?

Soft tissue fillers are remarkably versatile. A skilled injector can use fillers to:

  • Minimize facial wrinkles (including nasolabial folds and marionette lines)
  • Plump and shape the lips
  • Smooth lines within the lips
  • Decrease vertical lines around the lips (smoker’s lines)
  • Define the lip borders
  • Improve the contour of the chin and jawline
  • Smooth a chin dimple
  • Shape the nose
  • Sculpt the cheeks and lift the midface area
  • Fill in depressions at the temples
  • Fill in depressions underneath the eyes (tear troughs)
  • Add youthful plumpness to the backs of the hands

Dermal fillers should not be confused with other injectables like Botox, Dysport and Xeomin, which are neuromodulators. Although these products are also injectables, they don’t fill, plump or sculpt an area. Instead, neuromodulators work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause forehead furrows, crow’s feet and vertical lines between the eyebrows. They are often used alongside fillers for complete nonsurgical facial rejuvenation.

Are There Different Types of Dermal Fillers?

There are many different dermal fillers currently on the market. All of them help to restore volume and minimize the appearance of facial lines, but they do so using different ingredients — such as hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite and poly-L-lactic acid.

Even within the category of hyaluronic acid fillers, there are many brands and formulations. Some fillers are available in “families,” which are collections of fillers designed to address different needs and different areas of the body. Selecting the right one for you depends on a combination of factors, including your skin concerns, your injector’s experience and preferences, and your budget.

At Aesthetic Envy, we carry the complete product lines of Juvéderm and Restylane. These families contain an exceptional variety of options, allowing us to thoroughly customize your treatment. For example, each filler is formulated with HA particles of different sizes. Larger particles tend to work well for supporting larger areas, like the cheeks, while smaller particles tend to excel at providing soft, natural results in areas like the lips. Products in a family also vary in consistency, cohesivity, moldability and longevity. Your injector may recommend using several different fillers to achieve the best results from your treatment.

Juvéderm Fillers

The Juvéderm family includes a range of specialized hyaluronic-acid based fillers designed to treat the most common aging concerns in the face. Juvéderm fillers come in a variety of consistencies so that each area being treated receives the right amount of correction and looks natural. Different formulations are intended to either lift the cheeks, minimize vertical lip lines, smooth folds around the mouth and nose, or plump the lips. The results are immediate and long-lasting. Depending on which product is used, results can last up to one to two years. Juvéderm is among the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic treatments.

  • Juvéderm: The original Juvéderm is well-suited to correcting moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles, like nasolabial folds
  • Juvéderm Voluma: Voluma is designed for deep injections to restore age-related volume loss in the cheeks and midface
  • Juvéderm Vollure: Vollure is most commonly used to correct nasolabial folds and can last up to 18 months
  • Juvederm Ultra: Ultra is a softer, thinner gel primarily used for the treatment of lip lines and thinning lips
  • Juvederm Volbella: Volbella is the thinnest and smoothest product in this family, making it ideal for lip augmentation

Restylane Fillers

Like Juvéderm, Restylane is a family of dermal fillers that use hyaluronic acid to diminish wrinkles, restore volume and contour the face. Each Restylane product is designed for a specific purpose. For example, softer, smoother formulas are ideal for restoring and enhancing the lips. More durable formulas excel when used for cheek augmentation and the correction of age-related midface volume loss. Restylane injections begin to work almost immediately and last six to 18 months, depending on which product is used.

  • Restylane: The standard Restylane formula is a versatile choice for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds or lip enhancement
  • Restylane Lyft: Lyft is the first HA filler approved by the FDA to treat age-related volume loss in the face and hands
  • Restylane Defyne: Defyne’s unique cross-linking technology makes it a “flexible” filler to help maintain natural facial movement with expression
  • Restylane Refyne: Refyne is made with the same technology as Defyne but has a more pliable consistency, making it more appropriate for finer lines
  • Restylane Silk: Silk is a soft product specifically designed for lip augmentation and smoothing lines around the mouth
  • Restylane Kysse: Kysse is uniquely formulated to enhance the lip body and define the lip borders while maintaining a soft, flexible feel and natural motion

Lip Fillers

Maybe you were born with thin lips that have bothered you for years. Or maybe you’ve noticed a loss of volume in your lips as you’ve aged. In either case, an injectable filler like Juvéderm or Restylane can give your lips youthful, beautiful volume while defining your lip borders and cupid’s bow and minimizing the appearance of fine lines. At Aesthetic Envy, lip enhancement with dermal fillers is one of our specialties. The results of temporary lip fillers can be seen immediately after treatment and in most cases, there is little or no downtime.
