Dermal Fillers & Injectables

Getting older has its perks, but no one wants to look older than they are or than they feel. Wrinkles and fine lines that arise from muscle movement are among the first visible signs of aging. Over years of repeating the same facial expressions, they can become exaggerated, making you appear more angry, worried or tired than you actually are. We can help to smooth those expression lines by addressing the root of the problem.

Botox and other wrinkle-relaxing injectables are effective, convenient and long-lasting solutions to combat the early signs of aging. These treatments provide rapid results with only a few comfortable, carefully placed injections and no downtime. With periodic touch-ups, you can enjoy a rejuvenated look for years without ever having surgery. If you’re interested in learning more about Botox and similar injectables available at Aesthetic Envy, please call us at 916-333-4906 or visit our contact page to book your complimentary consultation.

What Are Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators are injectables designed to treat lines associated with muscle movement. Years of making the same facial expressions — such as smiling, squinting or raising your eyebrows — can form wrinkles that continue to deepen over time. With overuse, your facial muscles can stay tense and leave a worried, angry or stressed look on your face even when you’re in a good mood. Neuromodulators use different forms of botulinum toxin to temporarily inhibit muscle contractions to relax and smooth the appearance of expression lines. Since the 1980s, millions of these injections have been performed safely and effectively.

How Do Neuromodulators Work?

Neuromodulators are formulated with types of botulinum toxin type A, a purified medication that’s derived from bacteria. A minute amount of the product is injected directly into a muscle to block the transmission of nerve signals. If the nerve signals cannot reach the muscle, the muscle never receives the message to contract, resulting in a softening effect. The muscle relaxes, the wrinkles in the overlying skin gradually smooth out and the face takes on a refreshed appearance. An experienced injector can relax the targeted muscles in a way that keeps your face completely dynamic and expressive, just without the unsightly wrinkles that bother you most.

What Concerns Can Neuromodulators Treat?

As a cosmetic treatment, neuromodulators can improve the appearance of:

  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines

Are There Different Types of Neuromodulators?

Here at Aesthetic Envy, we offer several popular products in this category:

Botox

Botox is the first FDA-approved injectable neuromodulator and the most well known. Botox is best suited for the treatment of the upper face, including horizontal forehead creases, parallel vertical lines between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, a drooping brow line and tiny creases around the nose (“bunny lines”). The formula contains an accessory protein along with the botulinum toxin, which a small subset of patients may develop a resistance to over time. Depending on how many areas need improvement, a Botox treatment may only take 10 minutes with minimal downtime. You may begin to notice a visible smoothing of the treated lines within 24 to 48 hours, with full results appearing by two weeks and lasting up to four months.

Dysport

Dysport is a lighter injectable than Botox, which means that it tends to spread or diffuse over a larger area after it is injected. Dysport contains a different form of botulinum toxin as well as an accessory protein that can lead to resistance in some patients. The effects of Dysport may “kick in” more quickly than Botox, which can make it the better choice for patients seeking faster results. Improvements last three to four months before maintenance is needed.

Xeomin

Xeomin is a unique neuromodulator because it contains no accessory proteins or additives. Without extra ingredients, Xeomin is lighter and doesn’t migrate as much as Botox or Dysport, and is less likely to trigger the production of antibodies. It’s ideal for patients who have stopped responding to Botox or Dysport or who have an allergy to the ingredients in other neuromodulators. Results usually appear after five to six days and last for three to four months.

Neuromodulators vs. Fillers: What’s the Difference?

‘Injectables’ is a broad category that contains several types of products. The most popular injectables are neuromodulators and fillers, which are different — but complementary — treatments. Neuromodulators address dynamic wrinkles, which result from repetitive muscle contractions.

Dermal fillers treat static wrinkles, which appear due to sun damage, collagen depletion and facial volume loss. Fillers have no effect on muscle movements. True to their name, they work by “filling in” the area underneath a wrinkle and pushing the creased skin back upward. Dermal fillers can also be used to augment hollow areas of the face or improve the contour and proportions of features like the nose or lips.

Neuromodulators and fillers are regularly combined to provide comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

Am I a Good Candidate for Neuromodulators?

When referring to Botox, most people think of it as a treatment to combat signs of aging, particularly wrinkles. They’re right — Botox and other neuromodulators do excel as corrective treatments for existing lines, but that’s not all they’re capable of. Neuromodulators can also help prevent lines from forming. Wrinkles get deeper and deeper with age. By treating them early, they do not have the opportunity to become deeply ingrained in your skin, and you can achieve beautiful results using less product. Almost anyone who is in good physical, mental and emotional health may be a candidate for neuromodulators.

What Happens During Treatment?

When you visit Aesthetic Envy for a neuromodulator consultation, your injector will listen to your concerns and analyze your facial structure to determine the optimal treatment approach for your situation. They will begin the treatment by cleaning and sterilizing the area and identifying the injection sites. Then, when all preparations are complete, they will use a fine needle to inject the product into the selected muscles. This process usually only takes 10 to 20 minutes. The number of injections used will depend on your facial features and the severity of your wrinkles.

Discomfort during a Botox treatment is typically minimal and brief. The area can be numbed before injection with a cold pack or topical anesthetic.

Is There Downtime After Treatment?

Virtually no downtime is required after neuromodulator injections. Most patients are in and out of the office quickly and can return to their regular routine right away. Potential side effects include bruising, tenderness and swelling at the injection site. It’s a good idea to schedule your injection session for a time when you don’t have an important event coming up for a week or two, in case you experience any of these effects. Take care not to rub or massage the treated area, as this could cause the product to migrate to another area. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours after treatment. Generally, side effects are rare and recovery is swift. Treatment will not prevent you from bathing, wearing makeup or continuing with your normal skincare regimen.

What Results Can I Expect With Botox, Dysport or Xeomin?

Within days, you will start to notice improvement in the lines in treated areas. It takes one to two weeks to see the full effect. Results last up to three to four months. The product will gradually wear off and your muscles will function as they did before the treatment. This means that the lines you smoothed will slowly appear again. Patients typically schedule neuromodulator treatments three to four times a year to maintain their results.

For the best outcome, it’s essential to see a provider who is experienced in administering injectables and can recommend a personalized treatment schedule.

Dermal Fillers

Not all the lines on your face are caused by muscle movements. Some appear when your skin loses volume and elasticity, giving your face a more gaunt and hollow appearance. These types of wrinkles are often found around the mouth, nose and cheeks. Injectable dermal fillers are designed to treat moderate to severe wrinkles of this type. There are several types of dermal fillers currently on the market. At Aesthetic Envy, we carry the complete product lines of Juvéderm and Restylane. Both of these brands use hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in our bodies that is essential for smooth, flawless and hydrated skin. These fillers help to restore lost volume and minimize the appearance of fine lines, contributing to a more youthful appearance.

Juvéderm: The Juvéderm family includes a range of specialized hyaluronic-acid based fillers designed to treat the most common aging concerns in the face. Juvéderm fillers come in a variety of consistencies so that each area being treated receives the right amount of correction and looks natural. Different formulations are intended to either lift the cheeks, minimize vertical lip lines, smooth folds around the mouth and nose, or plump the lips. The results are immediate and long-lasting. Depending on which product is used, results can last up to one to two years. Juvéderm is among the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic treatments.

Restylane: Restylane is another great option for treating moderate to severe facial lines. Like Juvéderm, Restylane is a family of dermal fillers that use hyaluronic acid to diminish wrinkles, restore volume and contour the face. Each Restylane product is designed for a specific purpose. Restylane Silk, for example, is smoother than other Restylane products, making it ideal for restoring and enhancing the lips. Restylane Lift, on the other hand, is a durable gel used for cheek augmentation and the correction of age-related midface volume loss. Restylane injections begin to work almost immediately and last six to 18 months, depending on which product is used.

Lip Fillers: Maybe you were born with thin lips that have bothered you for years. Or maybe you’ve noticed a loss of volume in your lips as you’ve aged. In either case, an injectable filler like Juvéderm or Restylane can give your lips youthful, beautiful volume while defining your lip borders and cupid’s bow and minimizing the appearance of fine lines. At Aesthetic Envy, lip enhancement with dermal fillers is one of our specialties. The results of temporary lip fillers can be seen immediately after treatment and in most cases, there is little or no downtime.
