Pigmented lesions are benign lesions (brown spots) which emerge with age and sun exposure. They are caused by an increased amount of melanin in the skin. Spider veins are vascular lesions that appear in the legs and ankles, but also can be found on the nose, cheeks, and ears. IPL is a light-based treatment that helps to diminish these blemishes and reverse signs of aging.
What is it?
Intense pulsed light, or IPL, is a treatment that uses light to treat skin problems, particularly pigmentation problems, and rejuvenate the complexion. However, instead of a highly focused, single wavelength, IPL uses a broad spectrum of light wavelengths, delivered in brief pulses. This light helps the skin in two ways. First, the the intense pulsed light energy is absorbed by pigment in the skin (reds and browns) to restore an uneven complexion. To a lesser degree, IPL stimulates collagen production to improve overall skin tone. IPL is a non-ablative treatment (no skin is removed during treatment), and typically requires little to no downtime.
The broad spectrum light pulses over the skin and penetrates to really break up the skin’s pigment. The brown spots are heated up, get darker, and then eventually flake away. Though improvements may be seen after 1 treatment, it typically takes between 3-5 sessions to completely eliminate the brown spots
Light energy is emitted onto the targeted area. In vascular lesions (spider veins), the heat destroys cells where melanin is stored. It then heats up and collapses while cutting off the blood flow. In pigmented lesions, the unwanted pigment absorbs the light energy which eliminates excess melanocytes and brown spots. The surrounding tissues will remain unharmed. Some vascular/pigmented lesions will appear darker, blurred, vanish and flake within 2 weeks. Others may disappear within 24 hours. In both situations you can see an improvement after 1 treatment. A series of at least 3 is recommended for desired results. Outcomes may vary.
